UBC Okanagan Smoking Report

Smoking and UBC Okanagan

Jul 1, 2019 | Substance Use, VOICE Projects

The Campus Health Voice Project has been learning about the views of students, staff and faculty about smoking on campus over the last four years.  Information gathered through surveys, individual consultations, stakeholder interviews, and small and large group dialogues are summarized in this report.

Based on our findings recommendations are provided to commit to a Clean Air Initiative that:

  • Fosters communication by continuing to facilitate discussions regarding smoking on campus to promote understanding of and navigate changing patterns of recreational cannabis use and vaping.
  • Redesigns recruitment material for future students, staff and faculty, and commits to providing advance communications on campus about the goal of becoming smoke free.
  • Relocates gazebos away from all high traffic areas outside of the academic precinct to decrease exposure to second-hand smoke.
  • Set a target date for becoming 100% smoke free.
